The idea behind the digital wallet is to create a unified digital identity for citizens across the EU. Each member state must develop its own free wallet application by the end of the year, with systems designed to remain compatible throughout Europe. In addition to a digital identity card, the wallet could eventually include driving licences, diplomas, and other official documents in digital form, all carrying the same legal value as physical versions.
