Jamaica has begun distributing National Identification System (NIDS) cards to citizens as part of its comprehensive national digital ID implementation program. The initial phase of distribution, which commenced on November 16, 2024, will provide NIDS cards to 300 individuals, marking the start of a broader nationwide rollout that has been in development since the passage of the National Identification and Registration Act. The NIDS initiative aims to establish a unified identification system that provides each Jamaican citizen with a unique identification number. This system has been designed to enhance security and streamline access to government services through reliable identity verification, building upon Jamaica’s existing biometric infrastructure that includes voter registration systems developed in partnership with TECH5 and Pangea.
